Congratulations to Porter Olson, our RHS Student of the Week!!
Special Awards or Honors: All-State Swimmer, 30+ ACT
Student’s Plans After Graduation: I plan to pursue a career in finance after serving a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Nominating Faculty Member(s): Mrs. Kelli Gard
Faculty Comments: Porter is an outstanding student who consistently challenges himself academically and excels in his classes. He has taken numerous college-level courses throughout high school while also staying heavily involved in activities and athletics.
Porter is a dedicated member and leader on the swim team, but one of the things I really admire about him is his willingness to step outside of his comfort zone. This year, as a senior, Porter decided to try football for the first time. I think that says a lot about his character. It takes confidence and courage to walk into something completely new and be willing to learn alongside people who may have been doing it for years.
I also had the opportunity to see Porter's leadership firsthand in my classroom last year. He was a leader within his culinary group and was especially good about helping students who needed extra guidance. Rather than simply focusing on getting his own work done, Porter would step in, explain things, and help make sure the students around him were successful too. That kind of leadership and patience can make a huge difference in a classroom.
Porter is hardworking, dependable, and the kind of student who quietly leads by example. He doesn't need to be the loudest person in the room to make an impact. He shows leadership through his work ethic, his willingness to help others, and his courage to challenge himself.
Porter represents so many of the qualities we hope to see in an RHS senior—academic excellence, involvement, perseverance, and leadership. He is very deserving of recognition as Student of the Week.
The Ranger/WyoToday:
1. What advice do you have for younger students? Slow down and enjoy the four years you have. Stay caught up in all your work and make the most of every opportunity, it really flies by.
2. Who is your favorite teacher, and why? It’s hard to pick, but Mrs. Roberts and Ross have always made their classes fun and have been involved in my extracurriculars and life outside school.
3. Who is your role model? What have you learned from them? I’ve had many in my life, but my parents I’ve looked up to the most. They have taught me to always be willing to help out and bring out the best in others.
4. What makes your school special? Riverton is special because of how tight-knit we are. Because our school and town are small, we get to know everybody around us and build a strong sense of community.
